During the summers of the '60s and early '70s, Camp Whitsett hosted
the Junior Leader Training program for potential Troop and Staff leaders.
In the above two pictures are two former Camp Whitsett staff.
They are Jeff and Phil Hohensee.   Can you find them?

. . . and more importantly, does anyone recognize anyone else?

eMail message from Marc Lord who is in the above photos:

Chuck,

Photos are from Polaris 2 Star training I believe in 1973  (I think Falcon patrol flag references desire to go to Polaris 3 Star in 1974).

The staff photo includes Bill Topkis (4th from left, back row) and I believe Ron Morgan (1st on right, front row).  They are from Troop 137, Westwood (old Crescent Bay Council).

Both appear in the larger group photo, Bill is in the first row and Ron is in the back.  I am the 8th man from the left in the back row.  I was in Troop 137 with Bill and Ron.

I remember lots of faces, but no other names at this time.  I wonder if there is a roster of attendees and staff in the historical records of the Great Western Council into which Crescent Bay merged in 1972.

Bill Topkis and possibly Ron Morgan (both are Eagle Scouts and also Malibu Lodge OA), might be good sources for other names in these photos.  Bill I believe is a nationally known authority amongst OA patch traders, and may be an valuable source for images of old Whitsett patches, etc.

A lot of these guys and myself also attended Polaris training/staff at Wolverton.  Thanks for sparking the memory.

Best Regards,

Marc Lord

Some Camp Whitsett postcards from the mid 1950s

OLD postcard, pre-1955, Shows two trees on the Island

(the trees and island are long gone from Whitsett).
This was one of the very first Postcards.
.

Postcard #1 - Lake Ida, old dock area
Sold in  1956 or 1957
.
Postcard #1 shows Lake Ida and the OLD dock which was near today's Hopi Campsite, on the opposite side of the lake from where it is today. There was also a small island off of one corner.
.
.
.
Postcard #2 was taken on the old dock looking upstream. Two staffmen are on the "island" working with a canoe. The Staffman on the left is Harry Smith

Postcard #2 - Lake Ida, old dock area
It was first sold in camp, August 1955

Postcard #3 - Lake Ida, old dock area
Postcard #3 was taken from the old dock looking toward the dam. Notice the lower lake level because of the smaller dam (look at larger picture). The dam was raised 5 feet about 1965.
.

Postcard #4 was taken from the large rocks across the lake and shows a dock on the current side of the lake, but not the current dock. The new dock was built in 1997.

If you look at the picture to the left, you might wonder just where it was taken. In 1975, the building, now known as the Trading Post, was the Maintenance Shed - this picture was taken in front of it. Later a fence was erected in front of the building creating the Corp Yard for Camp Whitsett.

Photo of Whitsett Ranger Jim  "Smokey" Davis
and his wife Marge.
The "fire engine" would have been towed by a couple of staffmen and the hose hooked
up to a water source. No one remembers it being used to fight an actual fire - only during
a practice fire drill by the Whitsett Hotshot Team.
